Pot light installation

We install LED pot lights in open ceilings during a renovation and in finished ceilings that are already drywalled. We also swap old fixtures for LED recessed lighting, and add lights outside for security.

Pick the fixtures yourself, or we supply them.

We do the same work for businesses. Recent jobs include a lighting upgrade at McMaster University and custom lighting for a yoga studio.

"We also upgraded our commercial shop lighting."
Christopher Curtis, Google review

Basement wiring

Finishing a basement usually means new circuits, outlets and lighting, and sometimes a full basement suite. New circuits need room in your electrical panel. If yours is full, a panel upgrade may come first. Not sure? Try our panel calculator.

If your home still has knob and tube or aluminum wiring, a renovation is a good time to deal with it.

Kitchen renovation wiring

A kitchen renovation is the time to add circuits for new appliances, put outlets where you will use them, and light the counters and the island. Wiring it while the walls are open saves cutting into finished walls later.

"The work was done quickly and non-invasively."
Mike Floyd, Google review, on kitchen wiring for range and range hood outlets

Dimmers and smart switches

We install dimmers and smart switches on new pot lights or on the lights you already have. A dimmer lets the same lights run bright for cooking and low for a movie.

"John did a great job installing pot lights in my soffits and adding Smart Home technology for the lights so that I can adjust the times and brightness for them on my phone."
Catherine Long, Google review

Permits and inspection

Ontario requires almost all electrical work to be reported to the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). On every renovation job we file that notification for you, and its cost is in your quote. When the work passes, ESA issues a Certificate of Acceptance. Keep it for your insurer and for when you sell. How ESA inspections work.

Working with a general contractor? Make sure a licensed electrical contractor does the electrical work.

We are licensed with ECRA/ESA, licence #7014704.

How a job goes

  1. Free quote at your home.
  2. We file the ESA notification before work starts.
  3. We install and test.
  4. ESA reviews the work and issues a Certificate of Acceptance. Ask us for a copy.

Clean, careful work

Pot lights mean cutting into your ceiling, so we plan every opening before we cut and only cut where a light or a wire needs to go. Keeping your home clean and tidy while we work is something we take seriously.

We do not patch drywall. If your job needs patching, book your drywaller for after we finish.

"John and his team used hole saws and put the pieces back when finished. This will make refinishing much easier."
Norman Lew, Google review

What affects the price

Every job is quoted on what your home needs. These are what move the number:

  • How many lights, and where they go
  • Ceiling type and accessOpen joists, finished drywall, or an attic above
  • Insulation in the ceiling
  • Whether a new circuit is needed
  • Dimmers or smart switches
  • Fixtures supplied by you or by us

The quote is free and includes the ESA permit.

Frequently asked questions about pot light installation

Do I need a permit for pot lights in Ontario?

Yes. Ontario requires almost all electrical work, including new lighting, to be reported to the Electrical Safety Authority before the work starts. Anyone you hire to do electrical work in your home must be a licensed electrical contractor. We file the notification on every renovation job and include the cost in your quote.

Can pot lights go in an insulated ceiling?

Yes, with IC-rated fixtures. IC means the fixture is made to sit in contact with insulation.

Do you supply the pot lights?

Either way works. We can supply the fixtures, or install ones you have picked out.

Will I need drywall repairs after?

We plan every opening and only cut where we need to. We do not patch drywall, so if a job needs it, line up your drywaller for after we finish.

Do you install pot lights in businesses?

Yes. We do residential and commercial work. Recent commercial jobs include a lighting upgrade at McMaster University and custom lighting for a yoga studio.

How much does pot light installation cost?

It depends on how many lights you want, your ceiling and insulation, whether a new circuit is needed and who supplies the fixtures. Request a free quote and we will price your job, ESA permit included.
